Structure
How it ‘holds up’
Students learn to apply a variety of organizational constructs to
the consideration of and making of art and design. Spanning plastic and fixed
approaches to building and underlying organizational principles, students
realize their ideas in multiple physical and conceptual dimensions. The gaps
between thought and form are tested as ideas come to inhabit space and
time.
Intro to
Sculpture
Introduces fundamental techniques and issues in
three-dimensional art with emphasis on creative expression, design, and
craftsmanship. No previous art experience is required. Designed for the non-art
student in the general university seeking an appreciation and heightened
understanding of art and art practices. Students will gain experience and
direct knowledge from hands-on exploration in a variety of traditional and
non-traditional sculptural materials.
Project Description:

Your goal with this project is to create an
appendage that would better convenience your lifestyle as a
student/employee/human being. Think about your hobbies, activities, and
lifestyle. What could you create as an extension of your body to better enhance
your life? The appendage must connect or be attached to your body somehow.
Have you ever wished for a telescope eye
appendage?
What about super sonic ears?
Objectives:
This project will provide the opportunity to investigate the expressive nature of a particular sculptural medium. You will explore the assigned materials and processes in a manner that suits your planned concept. Using found objects and improvised media you will investigate the relationship between the literal, symbolic and contextual meaning of culturally familiar objects.
This project will provide the opportunity to investigate the expressive nature of a particular sculptural medium. You will explore the assigned materials and processes in a manner that suits your planned concept. Using found objects and improvised media you will investigate the relationship between the literal, symbolic and contextual meaning of culturally familiar objects.
Procedure:
This project will consist of a short introduction to the project + lecture of an artist in regard to the project on January 22nd. Students will be grouped in pairs and expected to work outside of class to come up with 10 ideas, 10 sketches. From those ideas/sketches, you and your partner must choose one idea/sketch to build a preliminary structure/armature to construct in class on January 24th. Please make sure to bring all 10 (if not more) sketches to class on the 24th as I will be checking to make sure you fulfilled that requirement. On Wednesday, the 24th you will be given the last 2 hours of class to work on prosthesis. If you and your partner do not complete it, you will have to finish it on your own time. You and your partner are required to post on our class blog a progress photo over the weekend. We will discuss/critique projects during the 1st part of class Monday the 31st. Post documentation from critique on class blog before next class.

The base material for your sculpture should be made primarily out of a firm, but malleable material that may suit the needs of your sculpture: cardboard, wood, chicken wire, plastic, Styrofoam, etc. You may use whatever adhesive suits your needs, but you will need to provide it: tape, glue (remember you have 2 hours), screws, etc. You may embellish your sculptures; however, keep it within reason as we have a limited amount of time to work on these projects.
